From early on the Swedish Chamber Orchestra realised the benefits of establishing an on-going working relationship with specialists in various fields not only to help develop the ensemble´s musical style but also to keep the musicians abreast of the musical world at large. This has been particularly important to an orchestra which is not based in a major European city, where different musical ex per iences are readily on offer every day.
H K Gruber´s extraordinary knowledge and enthusiasm for contemporary music has played a significant role in the Swedish Chamber Orchestra´s development which now regularly commissions and premieres new works. Through his introduction to young, Australian composer Brett Dean the ensemble has premiered and recorded three of his works - Water Music, Pastoral Symphony and Carlo - which will soon be released on the Swedish label BIS."
Meanwhile in October 2006 the Swedish Chamber Orchestra gave the European Premiere of a new violin concerto by Magnus Lindberg. As the Times commented on reviewing theper formance: “Poised between appearances at the Mainly Mozart Festivals in New York and the Barbican (July 2007), Magnus Lindberg´s new Violin Concerto has just received standing ovations at its European premiere in the quiet Swedish town of Örebro. Why Örebro? Because that is the home of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra which co-commissioned the work, and played it.“
A highlight of H K Gruber's 11 year relationship with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra wereper formances of Weill / Brecht's Three Penny O per a in November 2007. The close working association continues with programmes planned for both 2008 and 2009 which include a recording for BIS of two of his works for trumpet with Håkan Hardenberger as soloist. Additionally in 2009 Brett Dean will visit Örebro to conduct the ensemble in programmes of both his own and works by Gruber.
