The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Örebro, today announced that internationally acclaimed violinist, Nikolaj Znaider will take up the position of Principal Guest Conductor, commencing Spring 2009 for a period of three years. The role, which has been newly created by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, continues an important period of growth during which time it has quickly established itself under Music Director Thomas Dausgaard as one of the most interesting chamber orchestras in Europe today.
Nikolaj Znaider´s first concerts with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra as Principal Guest Conductor will take place in the orchestra´s home town of Örebro, on 26th February 2009 with a programme featuring Schumann´s Violin Concerto and Brahms´ Symphony No. 1 in which Znaider will both perform and conduct. Further performances will see a focus on Brahms, Mozart and contemporary works including the world premiere performance of Jan Sandström´s Flute Concerto in April 2009.
Born in Denmark to Polish-Israeli parents, Nikolaj Znaider studied with the eminent Russian pedagogue Boris Kushnir and drawing on this eclectic background his playing has been heralded in the Strad Magazine as “extraordinarily intelligent, soulful and impassioned, yet without a hint of indulgence" and the Chicago Tribune said “Perhaps not since the young Gidon Kremer burst upon the violin world in 1970 has a violinist caused quite the stir of Nikolaj Znaider". Die Presse wrote of his recent Vienna Musikverein debut “for many, the 32 year old is already today the best violinist of the world". In addition to his success as a violinist Znaider has already made a number of significant conducting debuts with the Russian National Orchestra, the Mariinsky Orchestra (on the personal invitation of Valery Gergiev) and the Royal Danish Orchestra, all resulting in immediate re-invitations. In the coming seasons he will make his conducting debut with the Dresden Staatskapelle, Swedish Radio Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, New Zealand Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra, Malmo Symphony, Norrkoping Symphony and on tour with the St Paul Chamber Orchestra.
