H K Gruber

- artist in residence

artist in residence
HK Gruber throws off labels as fast as pundits can affix them. Neo-romantic, neo-tonal, neo-expressionistic, neo-Viennese: he isn´t any of these things, so much as a sentient (and downright accomplished) composer who keeps responding to whatever musical stimulus, be it highbrow or lowbrow, 12-tone or 7-tone, bitter or sweet, that comes his way ...  Paul Driver of the Sunday Times
As the Swedish Chamber Orchestra´s Artist-in-Residence for contemporary music since 2006, conductor / composer HK Gruber has led the ensemble in programmes ranging from Kurt Weill, Hans Eisler and Igor Stravinsky to new and upcoming composers that have included Brett Dean and James MacMillan. The Swedish Chamber Orchestra also regularly include´s Gruber´s own compositions in their programming and 3 Mob Pieces is one of the works featured in their 2007 European tour with Thomas Dausgaard.

From early on the Swedish Chamber Orchestra realised the benefits of establishing an on-going working relationship with specialists in various fields not only to help develop the ensemble´s musical style but also to keep the musicians abreast of the musical world at large.

HK Gruber´s extraordinary knowledge and enthusiasm for contemporary music has played a significant role in the Swedish Chamber Orchestra´s development and included in their discography are two recordings with him on the Swedish label BIS: “Water Music” (2009) featuring works by Brett Dean and “Manhattan Broadcasts” (2003) comprising Gruber’s own compositions.

“Manhattan Broadcasts” is a work dating back to Gruber’s formative years as a composer and is one of the works featured in a programme this Spring when the composer / conductor will lead the Swedish Chamber Orchestra on tour with concerts in Vienna, Düsseldorf and Cologne with guest soloist Leila Josefowitz: Also featured in the progrmame are John Adams’ violin concerto, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Kurt Weill’s Symphony No.2
